Day 5

Drive to Agra, Fatehpur Sikri, Taj Mahal, Dinner at Esphahan

We will have early breakfast today and check-out from the hotel for our drive to Agra.

On the way we will stop at Fatehpur Sikri, the deserted red sandstone city, built by the Great Mughal Emperor Akbar as his capital and palace in the late 16th century.  It was abandoned soon after it was built when the local wells went dry and it remains today in much the same condition that it was over 300 years ago.  Now a UNESCO Heritage site, it is an extraordinary place to wander around with its buildings in near perfect condition. Read more about it here.

After check in formalities, we will head out for lunch at Sheroes Cafe – which is run by women who have been victims of acid attacks. The unique aspect is that the menu items do not have a fixed cost – you donate a s you like. Another opportunity for you to support a noble cause! Read about their story here.

After lunch we will proceed for a half day guided tour of Agra. Agra in terms of ambiance is still associated with its Mughal period. The Mughals besides being great rulers were also great builders and they preserved their best architectural wonders for Agra. It has many wonderful monuments – the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and aesthetically laid out gardens - each one a silent witness to a grand style of a golden era.

We then proceed to visit the Taj Mahal - one of the Seven Wonders of the World and arguably one of the most popular monuments in the world. This outstanding piece of architecture was built in 1653 by Emperor Shah Jahan to house the tomb of his wife Mumtaz Mahal. Its mermerising beauty makes it one of the most romantic buildings on earth. Read more about the story behind the Taj Mahal here.

For a bit of a contrast from our lunch venue, for dinner we will head to one of the most luxurious hotels in India, the Amar Vilas, to enjoy delectable Mughlai food at their restaurant called Esphahan.  The hotel is merely 600m away from the Taj Mahal and has glorious views of the monument.
