Day 10

Fight to Mumbai, Mumbai street food

Today is our last day in Goa. I have experienced this innumerable times – a certain feeling of sadness while leaving Goa. Our flight to Delhi is at 2.10 pm, so the morning is at leisure. After breakfast at the hotel there are a few options to consider.

We can arrange a car for a sight-seeing tour of Goa to see the colonial and Portuguese churches.  Or, should you be so inclined, we can arrange a fishing trip with local fishermen. Beware that it is nothing like a fishing charter in New Zealand! Or enjoy the last few hours of sun and sand on the beach. Later we head to the airport for our flight to Mumbai which departs at 1 pm and arrives in Mumbai at 2.30 pm. On arrival we will head to the hotel. Rest of the afternoon is at leisure.

Mumbai is the most populated city in India and the 6th most populated city in the world. With an estimated population of 20 million, you will see a sea of people everywhere you look! Mumbai was once an archipelago of 7 islands. During the 8th century, the area between the 7 islands was reclaimed and transformed Bombay into a major seaport on the Arabian Sea.

Today it is the commercial and entertainment capital of India. It is perhaps the most diverse city in India where there is an uncanny existence of wealth and poverty. Only a few suburbs separate the world‟s most expensive residence valued at US$1 billion from Asia‟s biggest slum, of Slumdog Millionaire fame.

In the evening we set out to sample some delicious street food. First we enjoy some finger food on the famous beach Chowpatty in South Mumbai. And later a short drive to Mohammad Ali road, which comes alive at night with street food stalls. It is known for its kebabs and grilled meat. We enjoyed street food in Delhi on our first night in India. Our experience tonight is also fascinating but poles apart from Delhi.

After dinner we head back to the hotel. But the night is young and Mumbai has a vibrant night life. There are lots of places to enjoy a drink or two. Or perhaps enjoy a late show Bollywood movie in preparation for tomorrow…
